Canned meat in the mailbox

Since Monty Python, Spam is known to be annoying - but not limited to email. Even in real life the mailbox gets filled up if you do not have a ‘insert ads in here and you will be sued to death’-sticker…

But why is real life Spam considered to be less annoying? Quantity? The reference to our local supermarket?
