Smart tinkering
I’m thinking of some ways to work on my home in terms of making it some kind of smart. But smart in terms of having ‘some’ information instead of being married to information gathering services. Thinking of presence detection I’d vote against geofencing as this system does not need to know my location. Movement sensors lack the possibility to track me when I do not move, like sleeping.
So my first attempt goes into my WLAN: As soon as I am home, my smartphone is usually using wlan. In other words, if the device is checked in, I am home. Looking at dhcp leases I should be able to detect presence as long as I am connected somehow. As an Android phone pings the network from time to time I’d be safe with that.
The target goal of my work here would be turning off the music when I’m out without me having to use a browser…
